This is a 19th Century, excellently Boxwood Netsuke carving of a Parodial representation of a Dutchman and Child where the main character is a Chinese man, rather than a European fellow, who true to his depicted subject is wearing a European style decorated robe. Instead of a trumpet, usual accessory of a Dutchman, the Chinese man is holding a mask that represents the Japanese folk theater character of Usofuki. The Chinese man completes the customary pose of a Dutchman (see photo #8) with a Karako that is climbing on his back and that he supports with his left hand. The Dutchman and the mask's eyes are inlaid in dark horn. Excellent parodial rendition of a Dutchman with fine detail and facial expressions, beautifully preserved with a mild patina.
