According to Dr. Karl Schwarz, in his book "Netsuke Subjects', "in old Japan, a curious type of beggar who sat by the wayside, for a small sum of money he inserted a feather or a small pointed stick inside his nose causing him to sneeze violently and often, wishing his client good health and long life." Well-rendered carving of a popular personality in Japanese culture, beautifully well-preserved.
