19th Century, Matsu Wood Netsuke nicely hand-carved in the Ittobori (one Cut) style by Sukeyuki in the form of a standing Shoju, with charateristic red hair, with colorful robes, with a fan in his hands. Sukeyuki came from Takayama, in the Hida province of Japan. He carved in the style invented by Sukenaga and enhanced by Matsuda, which consisted in using simple straight cuts in two-toned chosen Matsu (Korean pine wood) . Netsuke is in very good condition; it shows some wear around the cord holes, which means that it was actually used as a toggle sometime during the 19th century in Japan. Netsuke measures 1.04 inches wide, and 1.77 inches tall. It is in excellent preserved condition. Provenance: Private European collection.
