This a superb Massive, Heavy, carved Melanesian Tribal War (Paddle) Club. It is made from Kwila or other dark hardwood trees, sometime towards the end of the 19th century/beginning of the 20th century. They were used for warfare in close quarters and ambush tactics, mostly for finishing off a victim after injury by arrow or spear. They were also often used in ceremonial dances. This war club is embellished with double rows of incised small triangles that are placed together to form straight or angled lines, a couple of inches apart, on the paddle portion of the club. It feels very heavy when grabbed by its handle. Excellently preserved original condition. The Tribal War Club measures 32 inches in Length. It is 6-inches at its Widest point, about five inches from its tip, where it is 2.5 inches Thick. It weighs 3 (three) pounds.
